ELSA MERMAID MERMAID MELISSA BARBIE DOLLDisney’s Elsa is famous for “Frozen” but what about a Elsa Mermaid tropical transformation? Here is a one of a kind concept of Elsa as a mermaid with more up close look at the Mermaid Melissa doll.
MERMAID MELISSA AND DISNEY FROZEN ELSA MERMAID DOLLELSA MERMAID

Mermaid Barbie has been around for a while now but what makes this new doll so different and special is the unique attention to detail as a replica of Mermaid Melissa in her most well known blue mermaid tail seen all around the world in several videos though out the years. Elsa can be seen with white starfish like snow flakes in her blonde hair. Her tail reflecting the cold glacier dark blue ice with a touch of sparkle throughout the tail.

The Legends of Mermaids and Mermen

Mermaid Performers Mermaids Rental Mermaid Entertainers
Giving credit to the origins of mermaids would not be complete without a mention to the mermen.
King Triton as the father from The Little Mermaid is a popular reference to being a merman but there is much more to mermen than a carton image of one.
Real-life Mermen Antonio and our other mermen part of the team have compared it to discovering a new way of enjoying the art of underwater performing and a different style of swimming that allows for faster movement through the water.
We also have appearances of pirates and sailors that work with us and this character is not stuck with his feet in the sand… Often times you hear of mermaids stories from legends told about sirens luring men to the waters edge.
Our mermaids are the friendly kind would only want the company of people to share the beauty and fun of their watery world.
In our video below you will see clips featuring our mermaids, mermen. We also have scenes showing friendly mermaids playing with curious people who have entered their waters.
More videos will be added though out the year to continue the tale of the mermaids and merman.

Real Life Mermaids Entertain Children Swimming In A Tropical Pool And Mangrove Beach Mermaid Sightings

This month we wanted to bring you highlights from our more tropical appearances to warm up your spirit in this otherwise chilly month of February. As a gesture of love here is a bubble heart from Mermaid Melissa to kick off the warm fuzz feelings to share with friends.

mermaid melissa mermaid quote bubble heart believe

Our next adventure takes us to a large tropical pool party with a waterfall, hidden mermaid cave, slide, with deep waters -for mermaids to play and stretch their fins!
For this mermaid birthday pool party, 4 mermaids made a splash taking turns giving mermaid rides, playing games in the mermaid cave hidden behind the waterfall, swimming laps, diving underwater, and posing in the shallow end for pictures. Trading mermaid tips, answering questions, sharing secretes of the sea to the children was just some of the fun moments during the day. Mermaid tricks and tail splashing kept the kids looking for more and each request was met by the mermaids.
By the end of the day while the kids surrounded the mermaid cake and presents… the mermaids took this time to swim underwater which is featured in the second half of the video both above and below the surface. Our mermaids swim together, flip, play and enjoy playing to the camera as they swim by.

Our mermaids and mermen often can be found swimming near the rocky shore line or beach side interacting with people.
Stopping off at mangrove beach, we featured one of these sightings to showcase our “Mermaids for Hire” and also dedicating a “Merman for Hire” video just for Antonio since he also is known as our lead merman on the team.

More beach sightings, ocean footage, pool side entertainment, tank shows, and much more will be featured coming soon! Visit back to our website blog and subscribe to our youtube channel for the most up-to-date press releases and new video uploads!

Happy World Oceans Day!

stingray-web-mermaid-melissa-happy-world-oceans-day

World Oceans Day is June 8th:
The oceans are essential to food security and the health and survival of all life, power our climate and are a critical part of the biosphere. The official designation of World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.
World Oceans Day has been celebrated every 8 June since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. Since then it has been coordinated internationally by The Ocean Project with greater success and global participation each year.

mermaid melissa tropical island mermaid sighting beach

World Oceans Day is an annual observation to honor the world’s oceans, celebrate the products the ocean provides such as seafood as well as marine life itself for aquariums, pets, and also a time to appreciate its own intrinsic value. The ocean also provides sea-lanes for international trade. Global pollution and over-consumption of fish have resulted in drastically dwindling population of the majority of species.
The Ocean Project, working in partnership with the World Ocean Network, has been promoting WOD since 2003 with its network of over 1,600 ocean conservation organizations and others throughout the world. Events performed for WOD and awareness includes beach cleanups, educational programs, art contests, film festivals, and sustainable seafood events.

The theme for this year is Healthy oceans, healthy planet. Explore the site to learn how you can hold an event for World Oceans Day, or take action for the ocean on your own.

World Oceans Day, held every June 8th, is the United Nations-recognized day of ocean celebration and action. People all over our blue planet organize celebrations – which can be a huge event in your community, a special announcement, or anything in between – to support action to protect the ocean.

Take the Better Bag Challenge:
Plastic trash is choking our ocean, and 80% of it comes from land.
We can do better!
The challenge: promise not take any disposable plastic bags for a whole year.
The solution starts with you.

NARRATOR:

We love the ocean. And you love something, you want to protect it.

Unfortunately, the ocean is being filled with trash. And people all over the world who care about the health of the ocean are doing something about it. They’re talking trash and taking action.

You probably already recycle, and that’s a great start. So now, let’s talk about how you can prevent some of the surprising and sneaky ways that trash flows into our rivers and the ocean.

Come learn about marine debris and be part of the action.

mermaid-starfish-island-sea-star-mermaid-melissa-beach-tail

There’s a problem with trash in the ocean all over the world. People are generating more trash than ever, and sometimes that trash travels from cities to streams, rivers, bays, and then into the ocean, where it sometimes causes harm to coastal communities and wildlife.

This issue also costs communities money when people avoid beaches and bays because of all the trash.

Don’t you think it’s time all have an honest trash talk? We love the ocean, like you do, and we want to take care of it.

So the burning question I’m sure you’re all asking is, what is marine debris?

mermaid 13

Have you ever been to the beach and noticed litter, like plastic bottles or foam take-out containers on the sand? Or maybe you’ve been to a river or bay where there’s a car tire or bags stuck in the mud on the shore? Or a bunch of deflated balloons that say Happy Birthday floating in the water? All of that junk in the water, or on the shoreline, is considered marine debris. It’s anything solid and man-made in the ocean or Great Lakes that is not supposed to be there. And anything people use every day can become marine debris if they don’t dispose of it properly. And I mean anything!

The most common items we find when we do shoreline cleanups are plastics. But we also find rubber, cloth, glass, metal, and paper litter. Sometimes, the debris is so tiny, like a plastic microbead from your face wash, that you can barely see it in the water.

Marine debris is more than just trash in the ocean. Sometimes fishers lose their gear, like fishing traps, nets, or fishing line, and it continues to drift through the water, catching animals for a long time. We call that derelict fishing gear, and it’s marine debris. Have you ever seen an old boat left behind on a shoreline? Abandoned and derelict vessels are also marine debris.

So let’s review. Anything we use every day can become marine debris if we don’t dispose of it properly or if it goes into the water by accident. Marine debris can be very small, or can be very big, and anything in between. But most importantly, marine debris is one of the biggest pollution problems facing the world’s oceans and waterways today.

mermaid-melissa-ocean-professional-mermaid-for-hire-entertainer-website

Almost 4 in 10 Americans live in cities directly on the shoreline. So there’s a lot of trash generated from cities by the sea and the millions of people who visit our beaches. What might amaze you is all the other places trash can come from, and how far it can travel.

Marine debris comes from many different sources and enters the ocean in many ways.

Intentional littering and dumping are a big cause of marine debris. Sometimes the trash goes directly into the ocean, like when beachgoers don’t pick up after themselves. Or sometimes, marine debris is indirectly generated in a city hundreds of miles from the ocean. When someone litters on the street or parking lot, rainwater can move the trash into storm drains that empty into streams, rivers, and other bodies of water. Or, the wind can blow it there. Those rivers and streams can eventually carry the trash to the ocean.

Improper or careless waste disposal is another big cause. Have you ever seen an overflowing trash can, but for some reason, people keep putting trash there? Hello, marine debris! Or someone throws a piece of plastic in the trash, when it should have been recycled? Around the world, many people don’t have access to proper waste disposal or recycling – but the trash keeps piling up, and it has to go somewhere.

mermaid 16

It’s not just here on land – marine debris comes from activities out on the water, too. People on boats sometimes throw their trash overboard, and that’s against the law. Or, trash can accidentally fall, blow, or wash off vessels into the water. Sometimes fishers lose their fishing gear thanks to storms or passing vessels. Once the debris gets to the ocean, it is very difficult to trace the exact source.

The bottom line is, marine debris comes from us. Humans are the source, and every single person has the power – and the responsibility – to prevent it.

So yes, trash comes from cities, like right here in Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. The Potomac River flows all the way into the Atlantic Ocean, and all kinds of stuff can end up in the water if people aren’t careful. The cherry blossoms are in bloom, and it’s beautiful. But look at how much trash people are creating. Bags and bottles can end up in the river, blown by the wind or washed down by the rain. We’re going to talk about solutions a little later on, but first, let’s have some trash talk about why we should care.

mermaid stingrays underwater cayman

How does marine debris impact the ocean, animals, and me?

Would you want to swim at a beach littered with trash? Of course not. And the animals who live in the ocean don’t either – the difference is they don’t have a choice.

Marine species often get tangled in debris, from fishing nets to six-pack rings. If they get caught, they could get injured or even die. Even if they don’t get entangled, many animals mistake plastic debris for food, and eat it. This fills their stomachs with junk they can’t digest.

Debris can also damage important habitats, like coral reefs, by breaking or smothering them. Corals serve as the base of the marine ecosystem, and impacts here can be felt all the way to you and me. Plus, plastics have harmful chemicals in them. Fish eat plastic. We eat fish. The question is, can those chemicals harm us? Marine debris also hurts the economy. It costs a lot of money to clean up, and people don’t want to go to dirty beaches. Boats and ships could run into large pieces of debris, too, or get their propellers tangled.

We need the ocean – and everything in it. And the ocean needs us to keep it free of debris.

mermaid 10

So now you’ve heard about all the different kinds of marine debris and their impacts on the ocean. That may seem far away from you, but really, the problem may start in your front yard. When we take out trash and recycling, we need to do a good job of keeping it contained, like we have here. But you can’t control it all. So when you pick up your trash and recycling cans, be sure to pitch in and pick up anything that may have fallen out. And they did a really good job.

There’s a lot of waste that does end up as marine debris. But by far, the most significant material that ends up in the ocean is plastic.

mermaid 12

Why is plastic marine debris so common?

We know there’s a lot of trash in the ocean. Unfortunately, a lot of it is plastic. We find plastic everywhere from the ocean’s floor to surface. The plastics are all shapes and sizes and all different types. We find it on beaches and inside animals’ stomachs or wrapped around their bodies. That’s bad news for our ocean and the animals that live in it or near it. It’s also bad news for us.

A recent study from the University of Georgia estimated that 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the ocean every year. That’s like putting five bags filled with plastic on every foot of coastline in the world. That’s a LOT of plastic in the ocean, and it’s there because… well, we put it there!

The 5 most common items found during the International Coastal Cleanup are plastic cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic beverage bottles, plastic bottle caps, and plastic straws & drink stirrers. Notice anything in common with those things? It’s a lot of single-use, disposable plastic.

mermaid 2

It goes without saying – we produce too much waste. That waste ends up in the ocean when we litter or don’t recycle. Plastic is an important part of our modern lives – we use it for a lot of good things! But we need to take responsibility for how much we use every day and where it goes when we’re done with it.

The three R’s can help – and it’s up to every single one of us to practice them. Reduce the amount of disposable plastic you use. That’s anything you use once and throw away. Just use less. Reuse disposable plastics when possible. A plastic bottle makes a great coin piggy bank or watering can. The possibilities are endless. Recycle anything that can be recycled, so it stays out of landfills, where trash can blow away.

Ocean plastic is a huge problem that’s only going to get worse if we don’t change our ways. We can do better – for the ocean, and for us.

As you can see, trash can flow from your neighborhood into a drainpipe, then down into a stream like the one behind me, and believe it or not, it can make it all the way to the middle of the ocean.

mermaid-melissa-ocean-silhouette

What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

Well first, let’s talk about what it’s not. It’s not a floating island of trash, like a garbage dump or a landfill. It’s also not the only patch. They exist all throughout the ocean, and the Pacific Garbage Patch just happens to be the most famous.

Garbage patches are large areas of marine debris concentration that are formed by rotating ocean currents called gyres – kind of like big whirlpools that suck things in. A garbage patch is made up of tiny plastic pieces called “microplastics” that are less than 5 millimeters long. It’s more like pepper flakes swirling in a soup than something you can skim off the surface. You might come across some larger items, like plastic bottles, but it’s possible to sail through a garbage patch and not see anything. And they’re a big problem, for the ocean – and us.

People often ask why we can’t just scoop up all the marine debris in the ocean, and the answer is: unfortunately, it’s just not that simple.

The first challenge is the sheer size of these garbage patches. They’re huuuuuge! They’re constantly moving with ocean currents. And there’s debris from the ocean’s surface all the way down to the sea floor. Not to mention all the marine life we would disrupt if we tried to just scoop up debris.

mermaid 7

So what can we do? Well, the ultimate solution is prevention and we need to keep that as our highest priority. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle to keep trash out of the ocean in the first place. And we can participate in things like shoreline cleanups. It’s a lot easier to deal with debris before we get to the ocean.

Because until we stop marine debris at the source, we’ll just be cleaning it up forever.

Communities across the country are coming up with innovative ways to prevent debris from leaving the watershed, like this water wheel here in Baltimore. And also in D.C., Missouri, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. Innovative solutions are popping up everywhere.

Look at all this trash. As you can see, we really need to work on stopping debris at the source. This is one way cities are working on it, but what can you do?

Let’s dive into how we can prevent trash from entering the water in the first place.

mermaiad 5

What can we do about marine debris?

A lot of the trash that’s in our ocean is plastic, and that marine debris is hurting our environment, economy, and health. The problem will only get worse unless we change the way we consume and dispose of products.

Some people may say, well, I’m just one person, so I can’t make a difference. But that’s just not true! If each person who creates trash (and that’s just about everyone) took action, it would add up to a lot of change.

There are solutions, and together, we can prevent litter from ending up in the ocean. So what can we do? Well, the ultimate solution is prevention, and we need to keep that as our highest priority. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle to keep debris out of the ocean in the first place. You can bring your own shopping bag, drink out of a reusable bottle, and participate in things like a shoreline cleanup. Join a group cleaning the beach, or grab some friends and clean up your street! It’s easy. Be more conscious of how many disposable plastic items you’re using, and if you do – where are you putting it…in the recycling bin or the trash can?

atlantis mermaid shipwreck bahamas mermaid melissa

atlantis mermaid shipwreck bahamas mermaid melissa

So here’s a challenge: the next time you finish using a throw-away item: a bag, bottle, or utensil, answer the question, “Where is this going?” Because ultimately when you throw stuff away, there really is no away…it has to go somewhere.

So keep asking yourself this important question…How will you keep your trash from becoming marine debris?

Human beings are creating this problem, and it’s unhealthy for us, the Earth, and all the creatures depending on it.

But we can come together and build a movement and change our relationship with trash. Which is why we’re encouraging everyone to have a trash talk with your friends, neighbors, family, and even city officials.
So we’re all in this together. And if we focus on solutions and prevention, we can make the ocean and the Earth a healthy home for everyone.

As reported from Daily Mail:
Incredible new footage shows a real-life mermaid swimming among manta rays in Queensland’s stunning Great Barrier Reef.

Q & A: Mermaid Melissa

Q. Who is Mermaid Melissa?

A. Mermaid Melissa is a mascot for the sea who uses her aquatic lifestyle to promote ocean awareness through underwater videos and live appearances as a real life mermaid.

mermaid-melissa-keppel-beach-island-queensland-australia-southern-great-barrier-reef

Q. What do you do?

A. I perform worldwide as an underwater performer and showcase my ability to hold my breath for extended periods of time during live shows in aquariums, films and ocean conservation projects. I am hired by companies and brands directly with similar ‘under the sea’ themed projects, with the goal to use realistic mermaid imagery for product endorsements, highlighting the beauty of our oceans.

Q. At what age did you know you wanted to be a mermaid?

A. Having the mermaid nickname throughout my childhood sparked the imagination into adulthood to actually make the mythical mermaid idea come to life. It was never a goal as a child to become a mermaid, but the transformation took shape once I realized my passion for the water best played out in the form of a mermaid.

Q. When did you try on your first tail?

A. I used a method of swimming called the dolphin kick underwater, which gave the illusion of a mermaid tail and that was the reason I was called Mermaid Melissa. My first attempt at being a mermaid was in 2004 but it took many years for this to take a more realistic form.

Q. What made you want to legally change your name to Mermaid Melissa?

A. Changing my name was a way of honoring my mission to stay dedicated to promoting ocean education and living a lifestyle that reflects that cause. There isn’t a day I am not living as a real life mermaid both in and out of the water. It’s not just a nickname, it’s a reflection of who I really am.

Q. What is a day in the life of Mermaid Melissa like?

A. Most of my daily routine consists of being in the water performing at events, resort pools, company parties, traveling across the world to swim with sharks and other marine life to showcase the beauty of our seas. Every day I am in my mermaid tail, making an effort to speak with others about marine conservation.

The hardest thing about what I do is running a mermaid company on land while most of what I do requires me to stay submerged in water performing throughout the day. This makes my response time slower than I would like for client inquiries, but there isn’t always reception in the middle of the ocean, or access to wifi from my shell phone while swimming all day. I work really hard and manage my own company bookings directly, so it’s not always just about booking me, but a large variety of services including my custom mermaid traveling tanks for VIP showcases.

upsidedown-mermaid-stingrays-pic mermaid melissa

Q. Did you have a job before you became a mermaid? If so, what was it?

A. One of my first jobs was as a cage cleaner working my way up at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida for an animal actors show. I later pursued acting/modeling in Los Angeles, was a product manager for a corporate company and then dived into my passion of becoming a professional free diver. I have worked for marine life parks, theme parks, aquariums over the last 10 years as a dive manager, marine mammal trainer and show host. Most of my childhood passions included working with marine life. Having achieved these goals, I learned that your dreams and aspirations can change as you explore more about what is the best fit for your life as an adult and what direction you want it to take. My mermaid company is a full time job and passion that I pursue with as much dedication & determination as anyone would put into their own company they love. My brand is not just a reflection of who I am, but allows the mermaid mascot in me to be an active animal ambassador. It also allows me to become a voice for the voiceless, and speak up for the animals of the sea with my slogan, “Let’s help save the oceans before all creatures become mythical.”

mermaid-stingray-kiss-mermaid-melissa-web

Q. Where do you see yourself going in the next 10 years?

A. I am actively looking to continue my partnerships with companies and brands that have the same mission of raising ocean awareness. I hope to do that through showcases around the world performing as a real life mermaid at events and speaking on behalf of the animals of the sea. My YouTube channel series will continue to feature exclusive new and unique ways of sharing my mermaid adventures living as a mermaid. I hope to inspire others to live out their dreams, and create a positive ripple effect for change in the way we take care of & view our blue planet… One mermaid mission at a time.

mermaid-melissa-manta-ray-flying-australia

Q. Where can people see you in action?

A. Most of my bookings as a mermaid for hire are done through a company who informs me when I can promote the release dates of performance. I do many different events and appearances like: fairs, festivals, grand openings, pool parties, fundraisers, beach sightings, swim with a mermaid programs, tank shows, or even live aquarium performances. There are some events that are privately booked, but I try to share my mermaid adventures on my social media pages for those who can’t always make it out.

mermaid melissa rocks

Q. Where do you usually swim?

A. I swim in pools when I am land locked and in the ocean when I travel to the coast or visit the islands. Every morning I wake up knowing one thing is for sure, I will end up in the water.

kiss-glass-tail-mermaid-melissa-website

Q. What is the most amazing experience you have had as a mermaid?

A. The most amazing part about being a mermaid is the collaborations with clients that have a mutual love for the sea and the inspiring events we have been able to put on. All of these sightings allow children and people of all ages to see a real life mermaid performing live. Having a platform to entertain people doing what I love is a dream come true, and sharing my passion for marine life preservation has given my life deep meaning and purpose for me personally.

black-blue-mermaid-fixed-press-web

Q. How does your tail change color and shape?

A. I have 16 colors I can transform into right now and have “shed” several more throughout my lifetime. As a mermaid I like to change my look -just like how an octopus and other creatures in the sea can.

mermaid swimming with sharks

Q. What types of skills would you say Mermaid Melissa has that normal people don’t?

A. I think everyone has their own special set of skills and it just so happens that my affinity for the water and breath holding endurance for being submerged underwater for minutes at a time (as a professional free diver) has lead to this uncharted career path.

Years of hands on training and a background in a wide variety of high profile aquatic job roles, has given me the skill set needed to create custom mermaid performances and artistically invent new ways to make “mermaiding” a full time career. It is a reflection of my mermaid lifestyle both personally & professionally.

The new Cosmopolitan Magazine interview with Mermaid Melissa by Cosmo Journalist Heather Wood Rudulph:

mermaid cosmopolitan mermaid melissa living as a mermaid article real-life mermaid famous performercosmopolitan mermaid melissa real life mermaid living as a mermaid career working as a mermaid job lifestyle

Mermaid Melissa blue water underwater performer
I think I was destined to have this aquatic lifestyle because I don’t have any pictures of me — even from the youngest ages as a baby — where I’m not in the water. I grew up in St. Augustine. There was a pod of wild dolphins in the inlet where I would always go swimming. It felt normal for me as a 7-year-old girl to be swimming with wild dolphins.
mermaid melissa
Growing up, I had different nicknames like “fish girl” and “dolphin girl.” That evolved into Mermaid Melissa. I trained and performed as a professional free diver. We had these shows we called the human fish tank. I would dive and do tricks underwater. People would ask, “Where is your mermaid tail?” I thought, I’m going to give them something to talk about.
silver-springs-mermaid-melissa-web-press

I didn’t just slap on a tail and expect to get hired. I put myself out there — performing tricks in the tail and holding my breath for four to five minutes.

I started out working at children’s birthday parties. Once I started generating enough revenue from there, it grew.

Corporate parties wanted me, and then they wanted additional mermaids. I started recruiting other performers and training them as mermaids, mermen, and pirates. I was one of the managers for my free diving team, so I was already used to training people to be underwater performers. It’s one thing to be able to hold your breath underwater. But when you put on these heavy mermaid tails and try to make it look graceful while holding your breath, with no goggles on, it’s hard. There isn’t a rulebook on how to hire a mermaid. A lot of people don’t understand the cost and the effort.

I officially changed my name to Mermaid Melissa about two years ago. I’ve created a brand with my name. My motto is “let’s help save the oceans before all creatures become mythical.” It’s a lifestyle for me to live as a mermaid.
I have trained three girls to perform like me — and they even all look like me — to entertain as Mermaid Melissa. It’s a way I can grow the brand.

I definitely don’t have a normal 9-to-5. The only thing that seems to be typical in my day is getting up really early and getting ready. And there isn’t a day that I’m not in the water. I’m constantly networking and talking with clients and trying to arrange schedules. I’m hired to go all around the world. I was hired to perform in a shark tank in Japan in front of a live audience on New Year’s Eve.
I’ve been to Dubai & Bahamas aquarium in the Atlantis Resort.
The Grand Cayman Islands had me come out to perform and support local tourism.
And I just got back from Queensland, Australia where I performed in a 40-foot mermaid tank for the Rockhampton River Festival. While on location, I also shoot videos to promote ocean conservation. There’s one of me swimming with the manta rays at the Great Barrier Reef that went viral.
I perform in custom-made tails. Each weighs around 55 pounds. On land, you can imagine that’s quite a problem to even lift up. It’s like a corset on your legs.
Adults usually want a mermaid at night and for kids, it’s usually a day party. There isn’t much of a difference in terms of my performance or image — I keep it pretty family-friendly — the atmosphere just changes.

When I’m not performing, I’m constantly working on underwater film projects. My YouTube channel has been a huge platform. My geeky side enjoys sci-fi films and learning about the latest in technology.

I take the mermaid stuff very seriously as a performer and as a professional. I even changed my name, so I’m 100 percent in on this.

Fortune Magazine Mermaid Melissa Professional Mermaid for hire
Fortune Magazine features Mermaid Melissa:

Mermaid Melissa is so dedicated to her lifestyle that “Mermaid Melissa” is her actual, legal name. Her previous work experience includes such jobs as trainer for underwater entertainers, marine mammal trainer and lifeguard, so her work today comes as little surprise.

“I have been called a mermaid for most of my life, because of my strong swimming skills and love for the ocean,” she said. She wouldn’t disclose her rates, but she said that her work involves a lot of moving parts and a lot of travel, which she admitted doesn’t come cheap.

“Mermaid tank rentals require delivery, set up and my team to assist with the project,” she said. “Most of what I do involves traveling.”

She said that the downside to the job, apart from the physical demands, is the strong possibility of getting sick from spending whole days in cold water. However, she preferred to focus on the positive aspects.

“I like the reaction of the crowds during live shows, and interacting with people after a performance,” she said. “I welcome the curiosity.”

Real Life Mermaid Melissa is world-renowned for traveling the globe swimming the seas as a professional mermaid underwater performer. Promoting Ocean Awareness through her mermaid videos that share a message: “Let’s Help save the oceans before all creatures become mythical.”

Life as a Professional Mermaid

“Some girls collect shoes or fancy jewelry; I collect mermaid tails.”

— Mermaid Melissa, professional mermaid

As squealing pre-teen girls gather before a large tank at a Florida aquatic park, Mermaid Melissa wriggles into a 60-pound silicone tail and a clamshell bra.

Backstage, Mermaid Melissa nods to her production team, then, with the free-flowing finesse of a sea creature, careens into the water. Slowly and gracefully, she glides 14 feet below the surface; here, she’ll hold her breath for 5 minutes while doing tricks for the crowd on the other side of the glass.

With platinum blonde hair and blue eyes, Melissa looks more like a Barbie doll than Ariel. But for more than a decade, she has made a living in one of America’s strangest trades: the “professional mermaid” business.

The life of a mermaid, especially one who makes a living at her craft, is not for the weak-willed. It is a job that requires synchronous expertise in freediving, swimming, marine biology, and CPR — not to mention a superior level of physical fitness and core strength. With nearly a decade of experience as a professional freediver and underwater performer, Melissa fits the bill. But she is also a consummate entrepreneur who has built a thriving business around her mermaid alter-ego.

Under the Sea

As a child in the coastal town of St. Augustine, Florida, Melissa Dawn spent her early days reading books on marine biology, and exploring the treasures brought in by the tide. She developed a fascination with sea life (“Teachers identified my assignments by the dolphin drawings on them,” she says), and eventually sought to connect with them in real life:

“I would often join my older sister and go surfing…I’d place a tape recorder with recordings of dolphin echolocation in a Ziplock bag, and I’d try and play it to the wild pods of dolphins that visited the inlet I swam in. At 12 years old, I was convinced this would work, and was fascinated at the idea of better understanding, or one day cracking, the ‘dolphin communication code.’”

In her early teens, Melissa moved with her family to Orlando, and, for the first time, the shy, quiet animal lover “came out of [her] shell.” With dreams of someday working with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, she secured a weekend job as a show attendant in the sea creature stadium; by 16, she’d worked her way up to part-time cage cleaner, and by 18, she was tasked with directly helping the performers.

Eventually, she graduated college with a marine biology degree, became a certified freediver, and was hired by “the largest marine life park in Orlando” to be an underwater performer. For 8 to 12 hours a day, she swam in large aquatic tanks, entertaining thousands of tourists. It was a job that required a unique blend of advanced swimming skill, technical diving know-how, endurance, and extreme breath-holding.

“I worked my way up to where I was holding my breath for four minutes and 32 seconds underwater, and then, five minutes,” she says. “It required constant training, and I soon got to the point where swimming was as natural to me as breathing.”

Renowned for her breath-holding and underwater tricks, the venue began announcing her to the crowds as “Mermaid Melissa.” It wasn’t before long that audience members began to ask her where her tail was.

A Business Tail

Melissa has always favored Jacques Cousteau over Ariel: “I didn’t grow up obsessed with mermaids,” she admits. “I watched The Little Mermaid as a kid, but never thought I’d actually turn into one myself.”

Yet after dozens of inquires about her lack of a tail, Melissa realized it was time to suit up; when she did, she figured she’d also spread her new brand name outside of the confines of the Universal theme park.

In 2006, just after YouTube launched, she began posting videos of herself free diving; eventually, she moved onto swimming in full mermaid regalia — clamshell-embossed bra and 60-pound, realistic tail included. “There was nothing like this on the Internet at the time,” she says, “and I received a lot of positive feedback from viewers asking to see more content.” Very quickly, she became an Internet sensation, sparking long-winded debates among impressionable commenters over whether or not she was a “real-life mermaid.”

After a few of her videos went viral, Melissa posted a promotion offering her services as “mermaid for hire” at children’s birthday pool parties. The ad generated so much interest that she decided to launch her own professional mermaid service company.

* * *

Since 2007, Melissa has run her own mermaid mini-empire.

What started as her offering to perform at children’s’ parties has since expanded into a fully-staffed “mermaiding troupe” that puts on shows all over the world, and an arsenal of five custom-made mermaid performance tanks that are rented out frequently for private parties.

“I identify myself as a businesswoman with a mission statement of promoting ocean education through underwater entertainment,” she says. “For me, my mermaid persona is an escape from the norm — it makes me feel like Clark Kent transforming into Superman.”

Her performance company, “Mermaid Aquatic Entertainment,” is composed of a highly-trained team of merfolk, all of whom she sourced from theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles. She doesn’t just hire any old mermaid: her performers are skilled acrobats, swimmers, and, most importantly, freedivers:

“Freediving is a dangerous skill. It takes a lot of training and it is something you can lose if you do not continuously maintain it. I train my performers how to be the best at mermaiding, but I do not hire those without the skills to be safe and athletic underwater. The people I hire at my company have a strong background in freediving, and most have had experience entertaining in underwater tanks on a single breath.”

And who exactly hires a troupe of mermaids?

In the past few years alone, Melissa and her mer-crew have been hired by aquariums, hotels, resorts, movie directors, event planners, corporate companies, photographers, charities, reality shows, fairs, concerts, fashion designers, and corporate events — just to name a few. She’s worked every type of event, from lavish VIP parties to Hollywood movie shoots, and her work has taken her across the world: Japan, Dubai, Australia, Germany, the Bahamas, Italy, Belgium, France, London, Portugal, Jamaica…the list is exhaustive.

Often, clients request that she wear a tail of a specific color, and she’ll have to get it custom-made. But like any good mermaid, Melissa has learned there is much more to the profession than the quality of one’s tail: “It is one of many tools,” she says, “and, as with any business, no one thing guarantees success.”

Melissa has managed to build out an impressive online fan base: her 134,000 YouTube followers has earned her a YouTube silver play button award (her channel has over 160,000,000 views), and her 600,000+ Facebook fans provide her with an endless stream of business.

“My rates vary a lot based on what type of event the client requests,” she tells us, “but I will say that I do not get paid in sand dollars.”

A Mermaid With a Message

When theme park-goers first gave Melissa the nickname “Mermaid Melissa” ten years ago, she was a bit reticent to accept the title; since then, she’s not only launched a thriving business, but has legally changed her name to “Mermaid.”

“I guess I just decided to take it to a whole different level than they ever imagined,” she admits.

But the name change came with a message: after many years of working at the Orlando marine life park, she became disillusioned by “how captivity really plays a role in our society”:

“I have been on both sides of the issue — as a fan of marine parks, and as a trainer of killer whales and dolphins. What once seemed like a good source of education for children to learn more about marine mammals is now out of date. [Keeping these animals in tanks] is not the best way to teach future generations about respecting and protecting animals.”

Instead, Melissa advocates using mermaid shows as an alternative form of marine entertainment. “As a mermaid performer, I have the choice to perform, and I can leave the tank at the end of the day,” she says. “The mermaid persona has enabled me to be a voice for the animals who can’t speak out.”

Her company’s slogan — “Let’s help save the oceans before all creatures become mythical” — voices her vision: a world focused on protecting and saving the sea and its dignified creatures. In a roundabout way, it’s a message that harkens back to her dream as a child.

“When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up fast so I could have an adult job, and achieve my dream [of working with marine animals],” she says. “It’s pretty ironic how I’ve come full-circle: now that I’m finally an adult, I’m living out every little girl’s childhood fantasy.”
